How Oregon treats self-employment deductions
- Half of self-employment tax: deductible. Oregon starts from federal AGI; DOR says the half-SE-tax deduction flows through and needs no separate Oregon entry for full-year residents.
- Self-employed health insurance: deductible. DOR says the federal self-employed health insurance deduction flows through federal AGI for full-year residents.
- SEP-IRA / solo 401(k) contributions: deductible. SEP-IRA and solo 401(k) contributions deducted for federal AGI carry through to Oregon.
How the calculator handles Oregon
- 2026 bracket thresholds are from Oregon DOR's 2026 Publication OR-ESTIMATE rate charts and the 2026 withholding formulas (Charts S and J); heads of household use the joint chart. The 2026 Form OR-40 has not been published yet.
- 2026 standard deduction ($2,910 / $5,820 / $4,685) is from the DOR 2026 Combined Payroll Tax Report instructions and withholding formulas; the earlier OR-ESTIMATE publication listed estimates of $2,900 / $5,800 / $4,650. Confirm against the 2026 OR-40 instructions when released.
- Personal exemption credit is $263 per exemption in the 2026 withholding formulas (OR-ESTIMATE estimated $260). Modeled as $0 when AGI exceeds $100,000 (single) or $200,000 (joint, head of household).
- Oregon subtracts federal income tax liability (2026 limit $8,750, $4,375 MFS), phased out between $125,000 and $145,000 AGI (single) or $250,000 and $290,000 (joint/HoH). Modeled with a straight-line phase-out (Oregon uses steps).
- Additional standard deduction for age 65+/blind, Oregon itemized deductions, the reduced pass-through rate for qualified business income (requires employees), kicker credit, Working Family Household and Dependent Care credit and other credits are not modeled.
- Self-employed people working in the TriMet or Lane Transit districts owe a separate transit self-employment tax (TriMet 0.8237%, LTD 0.80% of net SE earnings over $400, Forms OR-TM / OR-LTD); not modeled.
