How California treats self-employment deductions

  • Half of self-employment tax: deductible. California starts from federal AGI (Schedule CA adjustments); the deductible half of SE tax carries through.
  • Self-employed health insurance: deductible. Self-employed health insurance deduction carries through federal AGI (HSA contributions do not).
  • SEP-IRA / solo 401(k) contributions: deductible. SEP-IRA and solo 401(k) contributions deducted for federal AGI carry through to California.

How the calculator handles California

  • 2026 rate schedules, standard deduction and exemption credits are from FTB's October 2026 Tax News '2026 Indexing' announcement (CCPI inflation 3.4%); FTB says complete 2026 tables will be posted in late December 2026.
  • The 1% Behavioral Health Services Tax (formerly Mental Health Services Tax) on taxable income over $1,000,000 (same threshold for all filing statuses) is folded into the brackets.
  • Exemption credits are reduced for federal AGI above a threshold (2025: $252,203 single, $504,411 joint, $378,310 head of household; 2026 thresholds not yet published); phase-out not modeled. Dependent exemption credit ($491 for 2026), renter's credit, CalEITC and other credits are not modeled.
  • California does not conform to the federal QBI deduction or HSA deduction; California alternative minimum tax is not modeled.
  • SB 711 (2025) and SB 1435 (2026) moved California's general IRC conformity date to January 1, 2025 for tax years beginning on or after January 1, 2025, with listed exceptions.

Local income taxes in California

No California city or county levies a personal income tax. Many cities impose business license taxes, some based on gross receipts (not modeled).
