How Idaho treats self-employment deductions

  • Half of self-employment tax: deductible. Inherited: Idaho starts from federal AGI, which reflects the deductible half of SE tax.
  • Self-employed health insurance: deductible. Inherited through federal AGI.
  • SEP-IRA / solo 401(k) contributions: deductible. SEP-IRA and solo 401(k) deductions are inherited through federal AGI.

How the calculator handles Idaho

  • Rate 5.3% (in effect since Jan 1, 2025; confirmed by the 2025 Form 40/43 instructions EIN00046). No 2026 rate-cut bill became law in the 2026 session (the 2026 enacted list shows only HB 559 IRC conformity and unrelated income-tax bills), so 5.3% applies for 2026.
  • Zero-rate amount: the first $4,811 (single/MFS) or $9,622 (married filing jointly, head of household, qualifying surviving spouse) of Idaho taxable income is taxed at 0% for 2025 (Form 40 tax computation worksheet). Idaho indexes these amounts yearly; the 2026 values had not been published, so 2025 values are used.
  • Head of household uses the $9,622 married amount: confirmed by the 2025 Form 40 instructions tax computation worksheet.
  • Idaho conforms to the IRC as of January 1, 2026 (2025 Form 40 instructions) and uses the federal standard deduction (2025: $15,750 / $31,500 / $23,625, matching the federal amounts). The 2026 federal amounts ($16,100 / $32,200 / $24,150) are used on that basis; Idaho's 2026 instructions are not yet published.
  • Not modeled: Food Tax Credit ($155 per person in 2025, refundable; about $155 single / $310 joint less tax), $10 permanent building fund tax, Idaho additions/subtractions to federal AGI (e.g. bonus depreciation decoupling), itemized deductions and other credits.
