Sources we use

We use primary sources: IRS revenue procedures, publications, forms and instructions; Social Security Administration (SSA) announcements; state revenue department and secretary of state publications; and statutes. We do not cite other calculator sites or blogs as evidence. Sources are linked on each page and on the methodology page.

How we check accuracy

  • Calculations run on a single tax engine that is covered by automated tests; a failing test blocks publishing.
  • Worked examples in guides are computed, not estimated, and show each step.
  • Every page states the tax year it uses. Where a state had not yet published inflation-adjusted figures, the page says which year’s figures it uses.
  • We do not publish statistics we cannot trace to a source, and we do not invent survey results or quotes.

When figures are updated

We review federal figures between October and January, when the IRS and SSA publish the next year’s amounts, and state figures when states publish theirs or change their laws. The “Updated” date on a page changes only when its content changes.

Independence and money

HourFloor earns money from advertising and from affiliate links that are always labeled. Advertisers and partners have no say over calculations or editorial content, and a partner cannot pay to change a result. See the affiliate disclosure.

Not tax, legal or financial advice

Content is general information for planning. It is not tax, legal or financial advice. We describe how rules work; we do not tell you what to file.

How we correct errors

We fix errors promptly and log them on the corrections page.
