About HourFloor

Updated · Tax year 2026

HourFloor answers one question for freelancers and independent contractors in the United States: what is the lowest hourly rate that still leaves me the income I need? We call that number your floor.

Most rate calculators either ignore taxes or apply a flat guess. Most tax calculators ignore pricing. HourFloor joins the two: it starts from the take-home pay you want and works backwards through self-employment tax, federal income tax, your state’s income tax, health insurance, retirement savings and business costs.

How we work

  • Official sources only. Every tax figure comes from the IRS, the Social Security Administration or a state revenue department, and each one is listed on the methodology page.
  • Tested code. Automated tests check the tax engine before anything is published.
  • Dated and versioned. Pages show the tax year they use and when they were last verified.
  • Free. The calculators are free to use. The site is funded by advertising (not live yet) and, where marked, affiliate links. See our affiliate disclosure.

Who is behind HourFloor

HourFloor is an independent project operated by Volkan Eren, Antalya, Türkiye. Volkan is an app developer, digital marketer and content creator, and builds and maintains the site. HourFloor is not a tax firm and does not prepare returns or give tax advice; the estimates are for planning. For decisions about your own taxes, talk to a CPA or an IRS Enrolled Agent.
