How Nebraska treats self-employment deductions

  • Half of self-employment tax: deductible. Nebraska starts from federal AGI (Form 1040N line 5), which already reflects the deductible half of SE tax; Schedule I has no add-back for it.
  • Self-employed health insurance: deductible. Inherited through federal AGI; Nebraska Schedule I has no add-back for the self-employed health insurance deduction.
  • SEP-IRA / solo 401(k) contributions: deductible. SEP/solo 401(k) deductions taken above the line in federal AGI flow through; no Nebraska add-back.

How the calculator handles Nebraska

  • 2026 brackets come from the Nebraska DOR 2026 Tax Calculation Schedule marked 'DRAFT AS OF 8/17/2026 DO NOT FILE' and match the official 2026 Form 1040N-ES worksheet; final 2026 forms were not yet released on 2026-10-22.
  • Under Neb. Rev. Stat. 77-2715.03 the third and fourth brackets both carry 4.55% for 2026 (top rate down from 5.20% in 2025), so they are merged into one 4.55% bracket here.
  • Standard deduction ($8,850 / $17,700 / $12,950) and the $176-per-exemption personal exemption credit are the 2026 indexed values printed in the official 2026 Form 1040N-ES booklet. MFJ credit = 2 x $176; dependents' exemption credits are not modeled.
  • Additional standard deduction for age 65+/blind and the reduced standard deduction for dependents are not modeled.
  • Nebraska itemized deductions (federal itemized less state income taxes) are not modeled.
  • Credits not modeled: Nebraska earned income credit, child/dependent care credit, property-tax-related credits, credit for tax paid to another state, and others.
  • Schedule I adjustments (e.g., Social Security and military retirement exclusions, U.S. obligation interest) are not modeled.
