How Iowa treats self-employment deductions

  • Half of self-employment tax: deductible. Inherited: federal taxable income already reflects the deductible half of SE tax.
  • Self-employed health insurance: deductible. Inherited through federal taxable income.
  • SEP-IRA / solo 401(k) contributions: deductible. SEP-IRA and solo 401(k) deductions are inherited through federal taxable income.
  • Federal QBI deduction: kept. Kept: Iowa starts from federal taxable income (federal 1040 line 15, after the QBI deduction) with rolling IRC conformity, and lists the QBI deduction (IA 1040 line 1e) only as an add-back for the low-income exemption test, not as a modification (IA 1040 line 4 instructions).

How the calculator handles Iowa

  • Flat 3.8% on all taxable income for 2026 (SF 2442 of 2024; IDR announcement Oct 21, 2025).
  • Iowa starts from federal taxable income (IA 1040 line 2 = federal Form 1040 line 15) with rolling IRC conformity, so the federal standard/itemized deduction is already applied and the Iowa standard deduction is 0 here.
  • Personal exemption credit is $40 per person; MFJ and head of household claim two credits ($80). This is a fixed statutory amount confirmed in the TY2025 expanded instructions. Dependent and age 65+/blind credits are not modeled.
  • Not modeled: school district income surtax (a percentage of Iowa tax set by each school district) and the county EMS surtax (Appanoose, Cass, Pocahontas, Sac, Shelby, Winnebago); Iowa modifications on Schedule 1 (e.g., depreciation/section 179 differences); credits.

Local income taxes in Iowa

Most Iowa school districts levy an income surtax computed as a percentage of the resident's Iowa income tax (rates vary by district; some districts levy none), and six counties add an EMS surtax. Because the surtax is a percentage of tax and not universal, it is not modeled.
