How Mississippi treats self-employment deductions

  • Half of self-employment tax: deductible. Form 80-100 instructions (adjustment line 61): deduct 50% of federal self-employment taxes imposed.
  • Self-employed health insurance: deductible. Form 80-100 instructions (line 58): enter the self-employed health insurance deduction claimed on the federal return.
  • SEP-IRA / solo 401(k) contributions: deductible. Form 80-100 instructions (line 51): SEP, SIMPLE and qualified plan contributions deductible to the extent deductible federally.

How the calculator handles Mississippi

  • Tax year 2026: 0% on the first $10,000 of taxable income and 4% on the excess (2025 H.B. 1; DOR general information). Scheduled further cuts: 3.75% (2027), 3.5% (2028), 3.25% (2029), 3% (2030).
  • Exemptions: $6,000 single, $12,000 married, $8,000 head of family (head of family also gets $1,500 for the required dependent, total $9,500; dependents not modeled). Standard deduction: $2,300 single/MFS, $4,600 joint, $3,400 head of family.
  • Mississippi computes its own gross income and adjustments (Form 80-105) rather than starting from federal AGI; it allows 50% of federal SE tax, self-employed health insurance, and SEP/SIMPLE/qualified plan contributions as adjustments.
  • Not modeled: Mississippi-specific exclusions (retirement income, National Guard pay, MACS/MPACT, catastrophe savings), and credits.
  • Married couples filing a combined return may compute tax separately for each spouse, so each spouse with income gets their own $10,000 0% band (DOR general information). The calculator applies a single $10,000 band to joint returns, which is exact when only one spouse has income but overstates tax by up to $400 when both spouses have $10,000+ of taxable income.
