How Alabama treats self-employment deductions

  • Half of self-employment tax: not deductible. Alabama computes its own AGI (Form 40 Part II adjustments), and the deductible half of SE tax is not on the list; SE tax is deductible only as an itemized deduction.
  • Self-employed health insurance: deductible. Form 40 page 2, Part II, line 7 allows the self-employed health insurance deduction.
  • SEP-IRA / solo 401(k) contributions: deductible. Form 40 Part II, line 2 allows payments to a Keogh retirement plan and self-employment SEP deduction (self-employed qualified plans).

How the calculator handles Alabama

  • Rates and bracket widths are statutory and not indexed (2%/4%/5%; head of family uses the single schedule). No rate change has been enacted for 2026.
  • Standard deduction (2025 ADOR chart; 2026 chart not yet published) phases down as Alabama AGI rises above $25,999: single loses $25 per $500 to a $2,500 floor, MFJ $175 per $500 to $5,000, HoH $135 per $500 to $2,500. Modeled as a straight-line phase-down.
  • Alabama allows a deduction for federal income tax paid or accrued (Form 40, line 12; income tax only, not SE tax). Modeled using the estimated federal income tax.
  • Half of SE tax is not an adjustment to Alabama AGI. FICA and federal self-employment tax can instead be claimed as an Alabama itemized deduction (Schedule A, line 6); not modeled.
  • Dependent exemptions (amount depends on AGI), itemized deductions and credits are not modeled.

Local income taxes in Alabama

Some Alabama municipalities and counties (for example Birmingham) levy local occupational license taxes on wages and/or business license taxes; they are administered locally, not by ADOR, and are not modeled.
