How Louisiana treats self-employment deductions

  • Half of self-employment tax: deductible. Louisiana starts from federal AGI, so the deductible half of SE tax (an above-the-line federal adjustment) is already excluded.
  • Self-employed health insurance: deductible. The self-employed health insurance deduction is an above-the-line federal adjustment inherited through federal AGI.
  • SEP-IRA / solo 401(k) contributions: deductible. SEP-IRA and solo 401(k) deductions are above-the-line federal adjustments inherited through federal AGI.

How the calculator handles Louisiana

  • Flat 3% rate for tax periods beginning on or after Jan 1, 2025 (La. R.S. 47:32 as amended by Acts 2024, 3rd Ex. Sess., No. 11); graduated brackets repealed.
  • Standard deduction is CPI-indexed from 2026 (R.S. 47:294(B)); $12,875 single / $25,750 joint, HoH and qualifying surviving spouse are the 2026 amounts published by LDR on Form IT-540ESi (2026). LDR's earlier withholding rule cautioned final 2026 return amounts could differ slightly once January 2026 CPI-U data was applied.
  • The former combined personal exemption-standard deduction was replaced by the standard deduction; there is no separate personal exemption for 2025+.
  • Not modeled: Louisiana subtractions/exempt income (e.g., retirement income exemption for age 65+, net capital gains deduction for qualifying sales), and nonrefundable/refundable credits.
