How Georgia treats self-employment deductions

  • Half of self-employment tax: deductible. Inherited: Georgia taxable income starts from federal AGI (O.C.G.A. 48-7-27(a)), which already reflects the deductible half of SE tax.
  • Self-employed health insurance: deductible. Inherited through federal AGI.
  • SEP-IRA / solo 401(k) contributions: deductible. SEP-IRA and solo 401(k) deductions are above-the-line and inherited through federal AGI.

How the calculator handles Georgia

  • Rate 4.99% for tax years beginning on or after Jan 1, 2026 (HB 463, signed May 11, 2026, amending O.C.G.A. 48-7-20(a.1)); further 0.125-point annual cuts toward 3.99% from 2027 are revenue-contingent.
  • Standard deduction $15,000 single/head of household/MFS and $30,000 MFJ for 2026 (HB 463 amending O.C.G.A. 48-7-27(a)(1)); scheduled to rise $375/$750 per year from 2027 subject to revenue triggers. Values come from the enacted bill; DOR 2026 Form 500 instructions were not yet published.
  • Georgia has no taxpayer/spouse personal exemption (only a $5,000 per-dependent exemption under O.C.G.A. 48-7-26(b) for 2026, not modeled).
  • Not modeled: itemized deductions, retirement income exclusion (age 62+), 2026-2028 exclusions for up to $1,750 of qualified overtime and $1,750 of cash tips, low-income credit and other credits, and Georgia additions/subtractions to federal AGI (e.g., bonus depreciation decoupling).

Local income taxes in Georgia

No Georgia city or county levies a local income tax. Many cities/counties charge business license or occupation taxes, often based on gross receipts or employee count; these vary locally and are not modeled.
