How West Virginia treats self-employment deductions

  • Half of self-employment tax: deductible. West Virginia starts from federal AGI, which already reflects the deduction for one-half of self-employment tax.
  • Self-employed health insurance: deductible. The self-employed health insurance deduction is an above-the-line federal adjustment included in federal AGI, West Virginia's starting point.
  • SEP-IRA / solo 401(k) contributions: deductible. SEP-IRA and solo 401(k) contributions reduce federal AGI and therefore West Virginia income.

How the calculator handles West Virginia

  • 2026 rates are from SB 392 (2026), new W. Va. Code § 11-21-4j: a 5% across-the-board cut applying to taxable years beginning on or after January 1, 2026. Single, MFJ and HoH share one table; married filing separately uses half the thresholds.
  • Future cuts: under amended § 11-21-4h, additional rate reductions (capped) may be triggered for tax years beginning on or after January 1, 2027 based on revenue determinations each August 15; not applicable to 2026.
  • West Virginia has no standard deduction. Exemption is $2,000 per exemption (dependents also $2,000 each, not modeled).
  • Low-income earned income exclusion of up to $10,000 (married filing separately $5,000) for filers whose federal AGI is $10,000 or less is not modeled.
  • Not modeled: WV modifications (e.g. Social Security and retirement income subtractions, U.S. obligation interest), senior citizen deductions, family tax credit, and credit for taxes paid to other states.

Local income taxes in West Virginia

No local income taxes. Some municipalities (e.g. Charleston, Huntington) levy a municipal business and occupation (B&O) tax on gross receipts and weekly city service fees, which are not modeled.
