How Kentucky treats self-employment deductions

  • Half of self-employment tax: deductible. Inherited: Kentucky AGI starts from federal AGI.
  • Self-employed health insurance: deductible. Inherited through federal AGI.
  • SEP-IRA / solo 401(k) contributions: deductible. SEP-IRA and solo 401(k) deductions are inherited through federal AGI.

How the calculator handles Kentucky

  • Flat 3.5% for tax year 2026 (HB 1 of 2025; DOR withholding page). 2026 standard deduction $3,360 (DOR announcement, KRS 141.081); 2027 will be $3,470.
  • Kentucky has no head-of-household status. On a joint return only one standard deduction is allowed (Form 740/740-NP instructions); spouses may instead file separately on a combined return, each claiming a deduction against their own income (not modeled; it only helps when both spouses have income).
  • Not modeled: family size tax credit (low income), personal tax credits for age 65+/blind, itemized deductions, Kentucky adjustments to federal AGI (e.g., pension exclusion), and the LLET credit for single-member LLC owners.
  • Local occupational license taxes (see localIncomeTax) are not modeled.
  • Kentucky uses the Internal Revenue Code as of December 31, 2024 (static conformity, DOR Individual Income Tax page); the SE-tax, SE health insurance and SEP/solo 401(k) adjustments are unaffected.

Local income taxes in Kentucky

Many Kentucky cities, counties and some school districts levy occupational license taxes on wages and on self-employment net profits (rates and bases vary widely). They are administered locally, not by DOR, and are not universal, so they are not modeled; check your city/county occupational license office.

Choose your city or county in the calculator above to add its resident tax:

  • Lexington-Fayette. Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government charges a 2.25% occupational license fee on compensation and on business net profits. Any separate school district tax is not included.

Kentucky estimated tax payments

  • Who must pay: Estimated payments may be required if you expect more than $5,000 of income not subject to Kentucky withholding; no payment is required if the year's estimated tax is $500 or less.
  • 2026 due dates: April 15, 2026, June 15, 2026, September 15, 2026, January 15, 2027
  • Safe harbor: Underpayment penalty avoided if payments equal 90% of current-year tax or 100% of prior-year tax (110% if prior-year Kentucky AGI exceeded $150,000; $75,000 MFS); no penalty if the shortfall is $500 or less (Form 2210-K).
  • Form: Form 740-ES (or ePayment); underpayment on Form 2210-K
