How Hawaii treats self-employment deductions

  • Half of self-employment tax: deductible. Inherited: Form N-11 starts from federal AGI, which reflects the deductible half of SE tax.
  • Self-employed health insurance: deductible. Inherited through federal AGI.
  • SEP-IRA / solo 401(k) contributions: deductible. SEP-IRA and solo 401(k) deductions are inherited through federal AGI.

How the calculator handles Hawaii

  • Act 46 (SLH 2024): tax year 2026 brackets are the same as 2025 and the standard deduction rises to $8,000 single / $16,000 joint / $12,000 head of household (DOTAX Announcement 2024-03).
  • Act 24 (SLH 2026) lowers the 2nd/3rd bracket rates and adds a 13% top bracket only from tax year 2027 (DOTAX Announcement 2026-06); 2026 is unaffected.
  • Personal exemption $1,144 per exemption (taxpayer and spouse modeled; dependents not). Hawaii did not adopt the federal suspension of personal exemptions.
  • Not modeled: Hawaii's alternative 7.25% maximum rate on net capital gains, itemized deduction rules, refundable food/excise and other credits, the pension exclusion and other Hawaii adjustments to federal AGI.
  • Hawaii General Excise Tax (GET) on gross receipts (see businessCosts) is a major extra cost for Hawaii freelancers and is not part of the income tax calculation.

Local income taxes in Hawaii

Hawaii counties do not levy income taxes. All four counties add a 0.5% surcharge to the 4% General Excise Tax (gross receipts), which is not an income tax.

Hawaii estimated tax payments

  • Who must pay: Required if you expect to owe at least $500 for the year after withholding and credits, and withholding/credits will be less than the smaller of 60% of current-year tax or 100% of prior-year tax.

No estimate needed if expected liability after withholding is under $500. Due dates are as printed by DOTAX; a date falling on a weekend moves to the next business day.
  • Form: Form N-200V (Individual Income Tax Payment Voucher)

Federal estimated payments follow their own schedule. Work them out with the quarterly estimated tax calculator.
