How New York treats self-employment deductions

  • Half of self-employment tax: deductible. New York AGI starts from federal AGI, which already includes the deductible half of SE tax; no NY add-back.
  • Self-employed health insurance: deductible. Inherited through federal AGI; no NY add-back.
  • SEP-IRA / solo 401(k) contributions: deductible. SEP/solo 401(k) deductions in federal AGI flow through to NY AGI.

How the calculator handles New York

  • 2026 rates and brackets are from the official 2026 Form IT-2105-I (New York State tax rates, page 10). The FY2026 budget cut the five lowest rates by 0.1 point for 2026 (e.g., 4% to 3.9%, 5.5% to 5.4%, 6% to 5.9%), with a further 0.1 point cut scheduled for 2027.
  • Supplemental tax / tax benefit recapture (approximated): above $107,650 of NY AGI the benefit of lower brackets is phased out over $50,000 so income is taxed at its bracket's flat rate; the exact IT-2105-I worksheets differ slightly in higher brackets. Above $25,000,000 all income is taxed at 10.9%.
  • No personal exemption for taxpayer or spouse; $1,000 per dependent exemption not modeled.
  • NY itemized deductions (with limitations above $100,000 NYAGI), NY subtractions (e.g., up to $20,000 pension/annuity exclusion) and credits (Empire State child credit, NY EITC, household credit, college tuition credit) are not modeled.
  • Metropolitan Commuter Transportation Mobility Tax (MCTMT) on self-employment earnings allocated to the MCTD (NYC plus Dutchess, Nassau, Orange, Putnam, Rockland, Suffolk, Westchester): 0.60% in Zone 1 / 0.34% in Zone 2 of net earnings from self-employment if those earnings exceed $150,000 in the zone. Not modeled.

Local income taxes in New York

New York City residents pay NYC resident income tax on NY taxable income at 3.078%-3.876% (2026 brackets: single 3.078% to $12,000, 3.762% to $25,000, 3.819% to $50,000, 3.876% above; MFJ thresholds $21,600/$45,000/$90,000; HOH $14,400/$30,000/$60,000). Self-employed individuals doing business in NYC also owe the 4% NYC Unincorporated Business Tax (UBT) if total gross business income exceeds $95,000 (credits reduce it for smaller amounts). Yonkers residents pay a surcharge of 16.75% of their net NYS tax. MCTMT also applies to SE earnings over $150,000 in the MCTD. None of these apply to the rest of the state, so none is modeled.

Choose your city or county in the calculator above to add its resident tax:

  • New York City. NYC resident income tax uses the 2025 rate schedule (unchanged in the 2026 withholding tables). UBT is 4% of net business income after the taxpayer allowance (20%, up to $10,000) and the $5,000 exemption, with the small-business credit and the resident credit on Form IT-219 (100% of UBT at NYC taxable income of $42,000 or less, falling to 23% at $142,000). UBT is not treated as a deductible expense here.
  • Yonkers. Yonkers residents pay a surcharge of 16.75% of net New York State income tax.
